New NHS Food Scanner app campaign

The NHS Food Scanner App is aimed at families to help them make healthier choices when shopping, helping them reduce their consumption of foods high in fat, saturated fat, sugar and salt. You can use the app to scan the barcode of a food and then find out if the food is a ‘good choice’ and what swaps you can do to make healthier choices.

The latest results from the National Child Measurement Programme show that rates of obesity in reception aged children and those in year 6 have increased by 4.5% from 2019/20 and 2020/21, the biggest increase since the programme began. This latest campaign is focusing on childhood nutrition to help families lead healthier lifestyles.

Research shows that children are eating more than twice the recommended maximum amount of free sugars a day. Analysis from 2019 showed that nearly half of TV adverts were for high fat or sugar products or foods high in salt. This rose to 60% from 6 - 9pm, when the number of child viewers is at its peak. Exposure to these adverts can increase how much food children eat and shape their preferences from early on. 

When shopping, the supermarket environment makes it difficult to make healthier choices. A survey in 2018 showed that supermarkets tend to promote more sugary foods with 43% of space in prominent areas such as at the entrance to the store, at end of aisles and checkouts are filled with high sugar foods. Only 1% of these prominent areas were used for fruit and vegetables.
